About the Book: Charles Boyer: The French Lover is the first biography of Boyer to exist in English in almost forty years. Author John Baxter artfully presents the often-tragic life of this often overlooked, yet profoundly impactful French actor. Baxter relates how Boyer (1899–1978) established himself in the theater and cinema of France, confidently transitioning from silent film to sound and making a name for himself as a romantic leading man in Hollywood through the early 1940s. During World War II, Boyer put his career on hold to become politically active on behalf of his occupied home country. Upon returning to the stage and screen, Boyer adapted effortlessly to postwar character roles in both Europe and the United States. He entered television in the 1950s as both producer and performer, and then remade himself as a comedy performer in the 1960s. Nominated four times for Academy Awards, he was honored by the Academy only once―a special honorary award received for his activities on behalf of France during World War II.

Please note that only United States (excluding the territory of Puerto Rico) and Canada entrants are eligible.

I knew nothing of Charles Boyer’s life and had only an impression of suave European seduction that could play evil (GASLIGHT) and good (Cluny Brown), so I scanned his bio. What won me over was a quote I found regarding his long and devoted only marriage: “That love at first sight should happen to me was Life’s most delicious revenge on a self-opinionated fool.” I want to know more about this man.
Boyer is more of my Mom’s generation than mine but I do think Gaslight is a masterpiece of a psychological thriller. I’d love to have a copy of this new biography. Thanks for the chance to win it.
I love Charles Boyer, so great to hear there is now a biography of him! My favorites are probably HOLD BACK THE DAWN or GASLIGHT.
My favorite Boyer film has to be Gaslight. What a taunt thriller, with Ingrid Bergman and Joseph Cotton. Of course, like so many other Baby Boomers, first got to know Boyer through the many Looney Toons “Come with me to the Casbah” lines, and then Pepe’ Le Pew, the French lover of many cartoons from Warner Brothers. While the phrase was not in the movie (but made the trailer), much like “Play it again, Sam,” well, when the legend becomes accepted fact, print the legend! I would love to win a book.
I first was introduced to Charles Boyer as a kid on The Lucy Show.
My favorite movie of his has to be Gaslight! That movie has it all and the acting is great so great!!
I think my favorite film of his is Gaslight with Ingrid Bergman. He is so sinister and disturbed in that film and you never know what he will do next. Incredible acting from all in that movie too! Very suspenseful.
My favorite film of his is: barefoot in the park with Jane fonda and Robert Redford, he is just so funny in the movie
Gaslight is definitely one of my favourite films but I really loved his performance in All This and Heaven Too. His performance as a loving father trapped in a loveless marriage was heartbreaking.
I really enjoy many Charles Boyer performances—so smooth and urbane.
My favorite is probably Algiers as Pepe Le Moko -his chemistry with the incendiary Hedy Lamarr is tremendous! I just adore these classic era Hollywood books and this blog!
Gaslight! Best movie. Such a handsome, sexy villain! You can just see the wheels turning! All time favorite. Next favorite i think was called Cloony Brown!!!! Deliteful in that one. Just love to learn more about Charles Boyer
“History is Made at Night” is one of my all time favorite movies. It’s underappreciated but has forever stayed in my heart. Charles Boyer is one of the most romantic leading men of the classic era of film.
Thank you for this opportunity! I recently watched Fritz Lang’s “Liliom” from 1934. Charles Boyer was by far the best Liliom I have ever watched so I will say “Liliom” is my favorite!
Ooh, so happy to hear this book is being published. My favorite of Boyer’s films is Love Affair with Irene Dunne. As much as I adore Cary Grant, Boyer’s performance in this story outshines his in An Affair to Remember.
I do not have a Twitter account, so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message.
The only film I’ve seen of Charles Boyer is Barefoot in the Park. It was probably more because there was a super young Robert Redford and Jane Fonda as the main stars. It would be great to get a chance to learn more about the actor and his career in reading the book!
My favorite Boyer film is “Hold Back the Dawn.” He has marvelous chemistry with Olivia de Havilland. I long to know more about him.
“Barefoot In the Park” and “Gaslight.” Completely different roles. So much fun and energy and enthusiasm in one, terrifying in the other.
My favorite Charles Boyer film is all This and Heaven Too with Bette Davis and Barbara O’Neill. The contrast of his relationship with Barbara and his relationship with Bette. His struggle to do what’s right, what’s best for his children, his love for his children, and his last sacrifice for the woman he loved. Beautiful, but tragic.
My favorite Charles Boyer film is “Love Affair,” with Irene Dunne. He and Dunne have a fabulous chemistry and I truly believe their whirlwind romance on the boat. I also love his appearance as himself in “I Love Lucy.” When I see Boyer, I can’t help but think “Lucy! I love you! Rawr!”
In the UK in the 1960s there qere always black and white films on television on Sunday afternoons. I was pretty young but I remember stars like Clark Gable, Cary Grant, Barbara Stanwyck, Bette Davis, Gregoey Peck and so on. One film that has always stayed with me is ‘Gaslight’ with Charles Boyer and Ingrid Bergman. This film has a heavy brooding film-noirish type atmosphere with great cinematography – deep dark shadows and strange noises – and Boyer as the suave, debonair lover who is also a murderer with an ulterior motive, and the increasingly desperate Beergman with superb in these roles and ideally cast. I would highly recommend this film to anyone who hasn’t seen it
Hi – My initial memories of Boyer were on “The Lucy Show’ reruns. Suave and (ok, I have to use the word here) – “debonair” – but most memorable is “Gaslight”- It takes a great performance to be the heavy and he pulled it off incredibly well. I always would put him in the some type of category as Cary Grant – stylish, suave, believable – I guess his role as Gregory Anton in “Gaslight” could be coupled with Grant’s
Johnnie in “Suspicion” (double feature!). His early career with French directors seems fascinating and I am sure the book covers it well – looking forward to reading up on it weather I win a copy or not; Boyer is a great topic.
Tough to pick one favourite Charles Boyer movie. There are so many memorable performances. HOLD BACK THE DAWN (1941) is a favourite of mine. The film I watch the most starring Charles Boyer would be BAREFOOT IN THE PARK (1967). He plays a fun character in a delightful Neil Simon comedy.
For me, it’s a tossup between Love Affair, Gaslight, Hold Back the Dawn, and The Earrings of Madame de… Fantastic performances, not only by Boyer. He’s a favorite of mine and I’d love to know more about him as a person
I would have to say either Gaslight or Love Affair. Two very different characters, but he’s amazing in both roles. An icon forever.
