Fair-haired American child actress who become one of the great Broadway stars of the twenties. Despite an Academy Award for The Sin of Madelon Claudet, she soon returned to the stage to pursue her theatrical style. Her return to films in later years was more successful, and she won another Academy Award for Airport. Married writer Charles MacArthur (died 1956); actor James MacArthur is their adopted son.
