Although from the coast of Lancashire, she proved adept at a variety of terrace-row accents, and played maids, landladies, cleaners, shop-women and forth-right parents. She was also popular on a number of TV series including the British sitcoms "Meet the Wife" and "Last of the Summer Wine". She is the mother of former child star Janette Scott.
