Palely attractive and stocky, Nydia Westman had spinsters-on-the-shelf down to a "T" and could make them comic, pathetic, twittering or fey. From theatrical parents, she made her Broadway debut at the age of 16, alternating plays with films from the early 1930s. She left films in the late 1940s but came back years later to play a few old maids.
