About the book: Through a career that spanned decades and included dozens of films—among them such American masterpieces as The Searchers, The Grapes of Wrath, The Quiet Man, Stagecoach, and How Green Was My Valley—John Ford managed to leave as his legacy a body of work that few filmmakers will ever equal. Yet as bold as the stamp of his personality was on each film, he was reticent about his personal life. Basically shy, and intensely private, he was known to enjoy making up stories about himself, some of them based loosely on fact but many of them pure fabrications. Ford preferred instead to let his films speak for him. What mattered to Ford was always what was up there on the screen. Now, in this definitive look at the life and career of one of America’s true cinematic giants, noted biographer and critic Scott Eyman, working with the full participation of the Ford estate, has managed to document and delineate both aspects of John Ford’s life—the human and the legend.

I would have to say The Quiet Man. That film is what few films can be; a comedy, a drama, a love story, and all tied together in a visual spectacle that leaves you wanting to price a trip to Ireland.
If I had to just choose one film out of that impressive list I’d pick The Grapes of Wrath. It’s such an important American story and one of my favorite books as well. Thanks very much for the chance to win a copy.
My favorite film by John Ford is ‘The Quiet Man’ ~ a magnificent achievement with all the right acting, directing, score, script, sets and cinematography.
ANY book by Scott Eyman is work having. I have this particular book, and anyone who gets it has won quite a prize.
Thanks so much for this comment MT! Much appreciated.
It is very hard to pick just one!
I love How Green Was My Valley, Grapes of Wrath, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and so many others. However, I do believe my all time favorite was the Quiet Man! The great scenery, chemistry between Maureen and the Duke and wonderful story keep this one of my favorite go to movies! I loved listening to Maureen O’Hara talk about working for John Ford.
I’m torn between THE SEARCHERS and THE QUIET MAN, but ultimately I have to go with THE QUIET MAN. The dialogue has become a part of my everyday life since I was first introduced to the film as a teen. The beautiful Technicolor landscapes, the fantastic score full of great Irish tunes, and the scene stealing performances by Victor McLaglan, Ward Bond, et. al. make this one of the most entertaining films of all time. And don’t forget Maureen O’hara!
I Love The Searchers 1956 – Wonderful Movie – History – Scenario – Performing –
One of the films that made me love cinema classic

I’d have to go with The Searchers! The touching story invokes thought about prejudice, fear, and revenge. The stunning landscapes make “the west” look beautiful and simple. Finally, the mise-en-scene and cinematography are eye candy throughout the movie, right up to the very last moments as John Wayne and the landscape are framed by the door. #gorgeous
I love many of his films, but The Quiet Man has to be my favourite. It was visually stunning, as well as combining the perfect parts of drama, humour, and romance. You can’t go wrong when you combine John Ford, Maureen O’Hara, and The Duke.
Posting on behalf of Don: Liberty Valance…
With a memorable musical score, magnificent cinematography, stellar cast you can’t beat John Ford’s masterpiece, The Quiet Man.
Hi, I don’t see your tweet. Please remember to tweet the message so that you can officially enter OR post here that you do not have a twitter account so you cannot post the tweet. Thanks!
I love the way Ford used the American landscape to frame his pictures. Monument Valley was like one of the characters in each movie he shot there.
The Grapes Of Wrath .Brought the book to life.
Hi Rhonda, I don’t see your tweet yet. Please remember to tweet the message so that you can officially enter. Thanks!
I choose “My Darling Clementine.” It is a deeply reflective film, examining what happens when the rule of law breaks down and how a fronttier becomes a civilization.
My favorite John Ford film is The Searchers. It is a moving tale about what happens when someone lets hatred consume them. Ford’s direction is impeccable. John Wayne’s performance is masterful. It has some of the most beautiful color cinematography ever in a film. It is a masterpiece that will stand for all time.
P. S. My Twitter handle is @FilmGuy1997.
I agree COMPLETELY – I never tire of it and watch it whenever it’s on TCM. #overandoverandoveragain #beautiful story #beautifulacting #johnwayne
Wagon Master (1950). It epitomises everything that is great about Ford’s poetic approach to cinema. No big stars but a thing of beauty.
My favorite John Ford movie is “The Quiet Man” because I watch it over and over and never tire of the story or the acting. Ford’s love letter to Ireland is Ford and his troop – John Wayne, Maureen O’Hara, Ward Bond, Victor McLaglen – never better than this still timely fable.
A nearly impossible question to answer, but for now I’ll go with Ford’s flawless evocation of the complex workings of memory and family in HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY, a film that moves in different, more intricate ways with each viewing.
My favorite John Ford movie is The Grapes of Wrath because that is a movie I can use to show my students visually the horrors of The Dust Bowl and The Depression. I’m a student teacher and I’m teaching The Grapes of Wrath in about a month. I would love to have a book on John Ford to share with me kids or to give me better insight into the man who was able to bring a classic to life.
I liked quite a few but my favorite would be the Quiet Man. Love the music, scenery and Maireen O’Hara is one of my favorites. I love the story. She was feisty and the Dukes character was awesome.
I am entering for my brother who doesn’t get around much on the internet. His favorite film of ALL TIME is The Searchers and he talks about it quite a lot. He thinks it is Fords best. He has it on dvd and watches it every few months. He can give you a speech about how great John Ford is!
Oh, that’s so nice of you to do… and good choice!
The Searchers, because Monument Valley never looked so good, John Wayne was never so multifaceted, and the quirkiness of character actor Hank Worden was never so clearly captured. 🙂
My fave John Ford film: Stagecoach. Perfect direction! Every shot set up perfectly and that fantastic stunt by Yakima Canutt. The characters each have their own “moments” and the interior of the “coach” is wonderfully staged. Ford is a master of both intimacy and action.
