Dynamic, pint-sized American singer and actor who described himself as "the first one-eyed Jewish negro" and often gave performances twice as large as the part demanded. On stage as a child, he lost an eye in a car crash in 1954, just before coming to Hollywood. Films could never really restrain him, and he remained at his best as a nightclub performer.
