MINI BIO:
British actor with twinkling eyes and thrusting chin, handsome in a rather old-fashioned kind of way. He took up acting in his mid twenties and brought his military bearing to films, in leading roles at first, even before stage experience. Later played affable types and dogged investigative policemen. In more recent times seen as randy old men and elderly soldiers with courtly manners and barking voices - but most memorably as the hotel's resident major in the TV comedy series Fawlty Towers.
