MINI BIO:

This fair-haired, charming plump British actress was often seen on seen on the British stage as maiden aunts and loveable old dears from all walks of life. Making her stage debut in 1908,  she played quite prominent film roles into her early seventies. Although no-one seemed more at home among the raspberry jam and Royal Doulton teacups, she could also convincingly play pioneer ladies of indomitable spirit with films like The Private Life of Don Juan and The Sky's the Limit.

Upon her death, her remains were interred at St. Mary's Churchyard, Mill Green, Station Road, Wargrave, Berkshire, England.

After her first marriage ended, she lived with fellow actor, Nicholas "Beau" Hannen, from 1922 but they couldn't marry because Hannen's wife refused a divorce. In 1928 she legally changed her name to Athene Hannen. They were married after his wife's death in 1960.

She was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in the 1959 Queen's Honours List for her services to drama.
