Regal Rosalind Russell seemed most at home in tweeds or silk evening gowns, and was often cast as a brisk businesswoman. After her success as reporter Hildy Johnson in His Girl Friday, she was able to exercise her own choice of dominant leading roles but did not pull out any real plums for herself until Auntie Mame and Gypsy. She was given a special Academy Award in 1972 for her charity work.
