A distinguished stage actor, Luther Adler, hailed from a famous acting family. His squat build, olive complexion and heavy-jowled features consigned him mainly to roles as oily villains and kings of the underworld. His film appearances were surprisingly few, although he did crop up on TV's Hawaii Five-O in the 1970s with another of his unctuous crime czars. His second marriage was to actress Sylvia Sidney from 1938 to 1946. He played Hitler twice.
